With a new year right around the corner, you’re probably eager to put your divorce behind you. One good way to do this is through New Year’s resolutions. These resolutions can help give you some good direction for your first year after your divorce…
New Year’s Resolutions: Making Changes
Forgive & forget
The idea of “forgive & forget” might seem like one of the more cliché New Year’s resolutions. However, it’s actually very useful if you’re coming off of a divorce. Being able to both forgive yourself and your ex for what’s happened will help you feel better and begin to move forward in a better direction.
Plus, once you can forgive, the “forget” part becomes natural. That means you won’t have those repeating thoughts about what went wrong and what could’ve been different. Rather, once you can accept what’s happened, you can let those feelings go. This will let you feel better, and at peace with yourself.
Focus on kindness
Divorce can leave people feeling very bitter. Sometimes, this bitterness can make its way into how a person treats others. However, this bitterness will only serve to make things harder for you. As a result, another of the New Year’s resolutions to consider is about focusing on being kind.
Kindness is a two-way street; if you’re nice to others, odds are they’ll be nice to you in return. The last thing you want to bring into the new year are negative emotions and energy. Instead, it’s much more useful to focus on being positive and nice, as that will help you out in the long run.
Do some self-improvement
Other common New Year’s resolutions focus on achieving some self-improvement. You’ve probably heard about people who say they’ll start eating better, go to the gym more, etc. Now, while most people don’t follow through with them, that doesn’t mean you have to end up like them.
Doing some self-improvement can be a great way to boost your confidence. Plus, when we eat healthy and exercise, we feel better too. Nothing shows the progress you’re making more than comparing where you were at the beginning of the year, to where you are after making positive changes in your life.
