When your divorce is over, it can be tempting to sell the old home and find a new place to start fresh. However, moving post-divorce isn’t a decision to make lightly. In fact, there’s a few factors to consider before making your mind up…

Moving Post-Divorce: What To Consider

The cost

Moving post-divorce isn’t going to be a cheap process. For starters, you’ll have to seek out a new home or apartment to live in. That means trying to determine if you can afford a new mortgage or rent right now. Not to mention the fact you’ll need to pay a considerable amount off on the old house.

There’s also the extra costs to consider. These are things like moving costs, packing supplies, realtor expenses, etc. Trying to move when you don’t have the funds can really place you in a hole. Therefore, it might be better to hold off for the time being.

Consider any obligations

While your marriage might be over, other obligations you have won’t be. That means you also have to give them some thought before moving post-divorce. That idea of “starting over” in a new area can sound nice, but you have to consider the reality of things first.

For instance, will a move hurt your obligations as a parent? Moving further from your ex could place a lot of strain on your co-parenting plan. You also have to consider work as well. If moving will make it hard to commute, then you might have to look for a new job.

What you trade for

Moving post-divorce, like many things in life, is all about weighing the pros and cons. That means you have to think about what you’ll lose if you decide to move. It might be hard to see that at first, but that’s just another reason why you shouldn’t rush a move.

Consider if a move will place you further away from your family and friends. Or, think about the location and the climate. Will you give up a nice temperature for a place that’s too hot or cold? Be sure to give factors like these a good amount of consideration before making a move.
