There’s many different reasons why a person might choose to get a divorce. One reason might be if you have a controlling partner. However, it can be hard to always spot the signs. Knowing what to look for can help you see if your relationship isn’t all that healthy…
Controlling Partner: The Signs
Isolate you socially
One sign of a controlling partner is when they try to isolate you socially. Controlling people don’t like it when “outside” people get involved. To them, they’re a threat to their control over you, or a source of jealousy. As a result, they’ll try and cut those people out of your life.
This can apply to both your friends and family. At first, it might start of small. They might get annoyed when you call your family or hang out with friends. Then, they’ll actively tell you not to do so. Once you see this happening, you can tell your partner is trying to get too controlling.
Emotional manipulation
A controlling partner also tends to practice emotional manipulation. This can happen in a number of ways. They might constantly criticize you in order to lower your self-esteem, and then make acceptance conditional. For example, maybe they’ll only show you praise when you do something for them.
They might also try to constantly guilt-trip you. Even for things outside of your control, they might still try to make you feel guilty over them in order to make you feel bad for them. If you feel emotionally beholden to them, then they can really exert control over you.
Invading your privacy
A controlling partner tends to not respect your privacy. They want to know what you’re up to at all times, giving you no time for yourself. They might track your social media history, or always press you about what you’ve been doing. Sometimes, they might even go through your phone or computer to get more information.
Not only does this show how controlling a partner is, but it also shows they don’t have any trust in you. Mutual trust is one of the most important aspects of any relationship. If your relationship lacks this kind of trust, then it can indicate future problems to come.
